The forecast for Thursday evening is clear and sunny and there won’t be a better night for our fun Ward 29 History bike ride. Learn about some of the families that helped to build (sometimes literally) East York, discover the hidden history in our own neighbourhood, and uncover the stories behind familiar (and not-so-familiar) buildings. The Ward 29 History bike ride is a guided tour through a selection of historic sites in three different corners of Ward 29. We ride at a comfortable pace and pause at each site for a brief discussion.
For this ride only, our starting point is at Playter Gardens on Cambridge Avenue at Danforth Avenue, one block west of Broadview Avenue. Meet at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013. As always, the tour gets underway at 6:30 p.m. rain or shine, but will be cancelled if thunderstorms are likely. Email info@29bikes.ca before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday if you want confirmation of the status of the ride; final determination will be made by 5:30 p.m.
You should bring:
- a bike in good working order,

We’ve already finished half of our six scheduled Thursday Night Rides for this year. If you’ve been meaning to join us for a ride but haven’t been able to yet, this is the week to get on the bike.

Ward 29 Bikes will be at the annual Ward 29 Environment Day hosted by Councillor Mary Fragedakis this Saturday, June 22 at Dieppe Park, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. We’ll be handing out new 2013 City of Toronto cycling maps and CAN-BIKE schedules, as well as sharing information about cycling projects around our neighbourhood, commuting and recreational routes around the city, and cycle tourism throughout Ontario. Drop by our table on Saturday and say Hi.
And of course, Environment Day isn’t just about us; you’ll also be able to drop off your household hazardous waste, pick up as much compost as you can carry, donate clothing, household goods, and school supplies for reuse, and—new this year—bring old documents for secure shredding.
Check out the full-size flyer for more information.

Ward 29 Bikes is riding in the East York Canada Day Parade on July 1 once again this year and cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to join us. The parade is a great opportunity for new and experienced cyclists alike to ride in a fun, friendly, and safe atmosphere while impressing thousands of spectators with your ability to balance on two wheels at parade speed, turn in circles, and wave. The parade has been run continuously in East York for more than 50 years and features numerous community organizations, floats, a motorcade, marching bands, and—for the fourth year—a growing band of cyclists who want to show how much fun riding around the city can be. The parade winds slowly through the streets of East York to the big Canada Day party in Stan Wadlow Park.
There’s only one thing that’s more fun than watching a parade: being in a parade! So bring yourself, your family, your friends, and your neighbours to the parade starting point (see the map below) on July 1 and get ready for the most fun you can have on two wheels. Wear red and white or Ward 29 blue. We’ll provide bike decorations, or you can decorate on your own if you want to compete in the best dressed bike contest.
Contact us if you’d like to participate this year or if you have any questions about the parade.

Whether avid cyclist or merely bike-curious, everyone is invited to our annual gathering of east end cyclists to discuss building a better city for cycling. City of Toronto staff will give updates on current and future projects, Cycle Toronto will tell us what they’re up to in the east end, and local advocacy groups will give updates on their activities and successes. A town hall discussion will help us set priorities for the coming year. Don’t miss this meeting if you want to get involved with cycling advocacy, share a project with us, or just see what’s happening in the east end.
